music for sadness

On Jordan's stormy banks I stand, and cast a weary eye
To Canaan's fair and happy land where my possessions lie.
I am bound for the promised land.

-Samuel Stennett

This is one of my favorite playlists. I originally put it together while struggling with depression in 2011; now it just keep growing, and I play it a lot. Discouragement can ambush me at any time, whether springing from grief, condemnation, or any other weakness. These songs remind me of God's love and sovereignty. They encourage me to bring my heavy heart to Him. He gives comfort and hope!

Suggestions?

  1. This is a suggestion you probably won't know anyone else who knows. An album by one of the anointed English worship leaders, Tim Hughes. If you want to try only a couple songs, listen to 'He's Got the Whole World in His Hands', 'When the Tears Fall', and 'Nothing in This World'. But really you should listen to the whole album beginning to end.

Also, when I'm in need of Sanity, I turn to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos.

    1. Thank you, Matthew. You are right; this is a good album! I have not listened to Tim Hughes for years.

  2. A composition that centers on Mary's excited testimony to her sister Elizabeth about bearing Jesus might seem an odd choice, but there are some important bits of text in the Suscepit Israel and the Sicut Locutus Est: The promises God made to Israel, and to Abraham (and Elizabeth), and his children forever.

Abraham and Sarah were improbable parents in their late age, but God was steadfast.

You say that you love Bach and Chopin, so you really should have at least one recording of the Bach Magnificat. Talk about an anointed worship leader! I recommend the Philippe Pierlot recording with his Ricercar Consort ($9.99 on iTunes) If you want to feel the amazingly tender embrace of God's love, listen to the Suscepit.
